Humpback
Whale Sightings Are Up in the Inside Passage
November 1, 2004 - Port McNeill, British Columbia. Northern Lights
Expeditions (NLE) has reported its best season ever for humpback whale
sightings on their sea kayaking expeditions in British Columbia, Canada.
"We were seeing them on almost every trip," says NLE Expedition
Manager Joel Litwin, "and there's nothing quite like seeing them
from the vantage point of a kayak."
Humpback whales
are an endangered species and, until recent years, were rarely seen
in the waters of the Inside Passage. Their numbers are now slowly
increasing, and they are becoming a more frequent sight on NLE adventures.
Humpback whales are the largest creatures in the area, often growing
to a length of 52 feet and weighing 30 - 50 tons. Their heart alone
weighs over 400 pounds. To see a humpback whale in the wild is awe-inspiring,
and guests on NLE trips this season saw many whales, including groups
of four or more, baby humpbacks breaching and other remarkable events.
Northern Lights
Expeditions has specialized in wildlife encounters by kayak for
23 years, and their experience on the waters of the Inside Passage
ensures their guests the finest trips possible, with the best chance
of encountering whales and other wildlife. Other wildlife commonly
encountered include seals, sea lions, dolphins, porpoises, eagles,
great blue herons and, of course, the magnificent orcas.
NLE trips offer
three different options in accommodations and comfort: camp-based
trips, lodge-based trips, and private yacht charters. For guests
that wish to further enhance their whale-watching experience, NLE
also arranges one-day whale-watching cruises aboard a first-class
whale watching vessel.
